Originally from the North East of England, Russell moved to Norfolk in 1997. He began a career as a mental health nurse before training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).
“In 2016 I left the NHS to set up my own private psychotherapy practice and this has been very successful. During the Covid 19 pandemic, my work moved from in person to online. What I, and many other therapists and clients, learned is that online therapy is just as effective, and often more convenient to the patient, as in person therapy.“
Accessing therapy online has a few benefits compared to the stress of attending an in-person appointment.
“I started supervision with Russell Wharton after finishing the basic training 4 years ago. I work primarily with children and adolescents and asked for a supervisor with experience in that area. Although I have not yet participated in the EMDR child training because of the Covid situation, having Russell as a supervisor has filled in this gap and more, to the extent that I have reached consultants training and they really appreciated the level I reached thanks to Russell’s supervision and my basic EMDR trainer. I highly recommend Russell as an EMDR supervisor, he has a very calm and responsible manner which facilitates the supervision process a lot. He is also very experienced using EMDR with different populations and conditions.”
Dr. Hanan El-Mazahy MD, PhD, AMBPP, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Consultant - Paediatrician - Psychiatrist. EMDR Consultant in Training“I’ve been seeing Russell for supervision for 5 years now and he’s a skilled and knowledgeable clinician. Calm and approachable. When setting up private practice, Russell was really helpful and encouraging and this is still the case now. I recommend him as a supervisor and as a therapist.”
Francesca Smith, Cognitive Behaviour Therapist / EMDR Therapist www.norfolkpt.co.uk“Russell Wharton has provided me with clinical and cognitive behavioural supervision for several years. His knowledge and expertise in both CBT and mental health have helped me develop my skills in and broaden my understanding of the most effective evidence-based interventions. Russell is approachable and easy to engage with and he has the knowledge and wealth of experience in clinical practice to ensure I have always felt supported and confident in the interventions I provide.”
Will Mertens, Cognitive Behaviour Therapist and RMHN,“Russell has been my EMDR supervisor for many years. He has supported me since my training in EMDR, and in becoming accredited and reaccredited. Russell is very knowledgeable and always has ideas and suggestions if feeling stuck or struggling with cases. Russell is a very experienced clinician and is more than happy to share his wisdom and offers a safe and flexible supervision space which I really value.”
Glyn Bannon-Ryder, CAT Therapist, RMHN and EMDR Practitioner“I have highly valued supervision with Russell over several years now. His clarity and his curiosity have really aided my development as an EMDR therapist and I have no hesitation in recommending him to others.”
Dr Jonathan Lyons, Consultant Psychiatrist.“Russell has been providing me with EMDR supervision for 4 years and has been with me every step of the way, supporting my growing confidence using EMDR alongside Art Psychotherapy with children. I look forward to these supervisions and rely on the succinct and clear advice and guidance Russell gives, demystifying the EMDR process in his very down to Earth way. I have also really appreciated being able to occasionally email Russell between sessions to check something out which he has made himself available for and has been containing. Russell is very knowledgeable and has a wealth of experience in using EMDR which makes me feel in safe hands.”
Emma Richards, Art Pyschotherapist and EMDR Therapist“I have been having some therapy sessions with Russell over the last 3 months. These have been online which have been a massive help to me as they allow you to manage a busy life as well as getting the support you need. The online sessions have worked just as well as they would face to face, and this is aided by Russell’s manner. He also uses white boards and other tools on screen which are excellent visual aids when needed. I would suggest to others not to feel limited to very local providers. The world has changed and seeing the right person is more important and feeling comfortable.”
Male client, 40s“I spoke with Russell via zoom for a couple of months and found the experience helped me tremendously. I was apprehensive to start with, but the platform, and Russell’s easy to talk to nature, made me feel at ease and I would recommend the sessions to anyone looking to take this decision”
Male client, 20s“For me, working online with Russell enables me to fit my sessions into my busy schedule. I have also found that I focus more on the therapy work, as I feel much less self-conscious than in person. I feel that this has produced a better result overall.”
Female client, 40s“Online therapy has been very beneficial for me. It has allowed me to get help from the comfort of my own bedroom. Each session felt helpful and tailored towards my goals. I felt comfortable quickly, and felt able to discuss thoughts and feelings openly and without judgement.”
